Step Into Our Classroom

Celebrating “Read Across America Week”

We recently celebrated “Read Across America Week” at Clarion-Limestone Elementary. We really enjoyed a performance by “The Hill Brothers” in our high school auditorium. Their show was “A Rockin’ Concert to Celebrate Reading”. We watched, listened, sang along, and learned motions to many of their songs about reading and books. It was awesome! We want to say a huge THANK YOU! to our PTO for bringing “The Hill Brothers” to our school!

Throughout the week, students learned about the author, Jan Brett. They read and listened to many of her books and even learned how to draw an armadillo! They visited all the second grade classrooms to hear each teacher read a Jan Brett book, and then do some fun activities. You may want to check out Jan Brett’s website at www.janbrett.com.

In our classroom, students went on a treasure hunt through the book, Comet’s Nine Lives. This is the story of a cat that goes through many of its nine lives while looking for a home on Nantucket. Students searched for treasures (objects in the pictures of the book) and learned a lot about life on Nantucket. They learned about lighthouses, nautical flags, scrimshaw, seashells, hurricanes, boats, and cats! Students spelled out their names with flags and learned how to weave a turk’s head bracelet just like sailors used to make.

Our special Literacy Day was on Friday, March 2 nd. We listened to a guest reader, Mrs. Himes, as she read the book, The Three LittleWolves and the Big Bad Pig. Mrs. Himes used to teach in our classroom, and we were really glad she came back to read this funny book to us!
